Barracuda Networks

Email Security, Firewalls & SASE

  • Security & Endpoint Protection
  • Subscription

For · IT and security managers at medium-sized organisations and SMB+ with hybrid infrastructure

Barracuda Networks is a broad security provider with products for email protection (Email Protection), network security (CloudGen Firewall, SecureEdge SASE), application security (WAF-as-a-Service), and data protection (Backup). Barracuda has a strong presence in the mid-market and sells its products through a partner model. Since the acquisition by KKR in 2022, the product offering has been accelerated towards consolidated subscription suites.

The licensing model is largely per-user (email, SASE) or per-appliance (firewall, WAF). Barracuda has steadily raised prices over recent years and actively pursued multi-year contracts. Customers who do not renegotiate on time typically face price increases of 10-20% at each renewal.

Purchasing Considerations

  • Unbundle Email Protection before signing

Barracuda often pushes Email Protection Premium Plus together with archiving and backup. In practice, only some customers actually use these modules. Check beforehand if you need Email Archiving and Cloud-to-Cloud Backup before accepting the bundle.

  • Review firewall sizing before renewal

Barracuda uses CPU-core based firewall licenses. When migrating to virtual or cloud firewalls, sizing is often too generous. An independent sizing review can prevent 20-40% over-purchasing.

  • Choose wisely between 1-year and 3-year contracts

Barracuda offers standard 1- and 3-year contracts. Discounts are negotiable for 3-year contracts, but you lose flexibility. For organisations with highly variable staffing, a 1-year contract with price lock is often strategically better.

  • Leverage the partner channel for deal registration

Barracuda sells almost exclusively through partners. Deal registrations and partner escalations secure extra discount that an end customer doesn’t get directly. A good procurement partner will handle this on your behalf.

Compliance Risks

  • Email content during threat analysis

Barracuda Email Protection scans and stores email metadata and sometimes full messages for threat analysis. For organisations handling special personal data (healthcare, legal, HR), this requires a carefully drafted Data Processing Agreement and explicit EU data location.

  • End-of-support on older appliances

Barracuda appliances require an active subscription contract for security updates. Organisations that stop or forget to renew continue to physically operate the hardware but without definition updates. This is a direct security risk that will be immediately flagged in an audit.

  • Migration after ESG incident

In 2023, Barracuda's Email Security Gateway (ESG) was impacted by a critical zero-day. Organisations still running physical ESG appliances are strongly encouraged to migrate to Email Protection (cloud). Ignoring this migration leads to compliance risks and insurance exclusions.

Frequently Asked Questions about Barracuda Networks

Frequently asked questions about Barracuda Networks licenses and purchasing.

What is the difference between Barracuda Email Protection Essentials, Advanced, and Premium?

Essentials covers anti-spam, malware, and phishing. Advanced adds impersonation protection, account takeover detection, and incident response. Premium also bundles Email Archiving and Backup. For organisations with elevated CEO fraud risk, Advanced is the minimum standard.

Does Barracuda add value compared to Microsoft Defender for Office 365?

Functionally they partially overlap. Microsoft Defender has improved significantly and is sufficient for many organisations. However, Barracuda offers stronger impersonation and social engineering detection and an independent "second layer" outside Microsoft. Many enterprise customers deliberately run both side-by-side.

Can SoftVaro take over our Barracuda renewal?

Yes. SoftVaro analyses your current Barracuda stack, checks if you are still paying licenses for appliances you no longer use, and negotiates the renewal. We also provide independent advice when considering consolidation to a single vendor (e.g. Proofpoint or Mimecast).
